How many times have you had a great idea for a piece and as you begin to write the words flow on to the screen like a magical waterfall?

Then it all comes to a screeching halt midway through.

You become discombobulated.

Unsure in which direction to take this new ‘masterpiece’. You write sentences then delete them. Over and over again.

Ahhhh, I guess this will have to go into the list of drafts along with the others.

Dive right in

The above scenario happens to me on a regular basis.

A new idea pops into my head — one that I’m excited about — and I can’t wait to get started on.

Tap, tap, tap go my fingertips on the keyboard until that dreaded point of confusion appears.

From then on it becomes a struggle.

Words are forced on to the screen. Half thought out ideas squeezed in. Using quotes to bulk up the piece.

All the writing finesse of a car crash.

Horrible.

And while the piece that gets published may turn out ‘fine’ the process was less than enjoyable.

Writing should be fun. There must be a better way.

Preparation is key
