The number of people you follow vs how many follow you is a big deal across all social media platforms it seems as it supposedly represents your social status.
If your number of followers is greater than the number of people you follow this somehow indicates that you are a cut above the rest and perhaps someone to look up to. But does it really matter?
What Does It All Mean?
I’ve never really taken much notice of the whole follower's thing on social media — mainly because I never had that many. But as my profile here on Medium begins to grow it’s something I’ve taken a little more interest in.
I’ve noticed that all the big names — regardless of which platform — always seem to follow very little but have huge followings and it got me wondering why?
Is it really just a social status thing? A ‘look at me' signal? A suggestion that you are so popular that everyone wants to follow you? What does it all mean!?
Other than an attempt to look like a big deal and someone worth taking an interest in I can’t see any other reason why it would matter, but to some it does.
I get that when it comes to the super successful this is always going to be the case. The Kim Kardashian’s and Lebron James’s of the world.
But when you get ‘Joe Bloggs' playing the old follow, unfollow game just to look…
