I would say the main benefit is that you have a direct line to your readers/audience.

Say Medium went bust overnight, shut down and was no more.

You’d lose all your followers, readers, supporters and the content you have on the platform.

With an email list, you can still keep in touch with your audience until you find a new place to grow.
