I Write For Myself First, Not The Reader

Because I’m not trying to reach an audience.

When you write, you should always consider the reader and your target audience.’

Sound writing advice.

However, when I write, I write for myself first, not the reader, because I’m not trying to reach an audience.

Yes, in the past I have followed the above writing advice. But not any more.

Why?

Because my writing goals have changed. I am no longer chasing the dream of writing for a living, nor am I trying to improve my skills in the hope of gaining clients, attracting followers or growing an audience.

When I write, I am basically talking to myself — side note: writing to yourself attracts a lot less attention from others than talking to yourself does. When you talk to yourself, people tend to become very uneasy and suggest you get some professional help, as they slowly back away.

Nowadays, I use writing as a form of therapy, you might say.

I use it to relax, contemplate ideas, organise my thoughts and get things off my chest. I don’t always post what I write online, but I do write almost every day.
