I Write for Myself, Not The Reader
‘Write with your reader in mind.’
Pretty common advice when it comes to writing and creating content. But I like to be a little more selfish and when I write, I do it for myself.
All those inspirational, motivational, positive mindset and life lesson pieces I create? I write them for myself because that’s the message I need to hear at the time.
When I’m feeling lethargic, with little drive to succeed, I write.
When I’ve had a bad day and need to vent, I write.
And when I’m feeling confused, worried, unsure of what to do next and need to gather my thoughts, I write.
Writing for me is a way to make sense of the world. To think out loud and steer myself (hopefully) in the right direction.
Do I get excited to receive a comment from a reader saying that I inspired, motivated or gave them a boost of positive energy with my articles? You’re damn right I do. It feels great knowing you’ve been able to brighten someone else’s day or give them a much-needed energy boost in their time of need.
But all of that is just a by-product of me writing for myself — I guess others relate because deep down we are all on similar paths with similar wants, needs and desires.
So, yea, keep your reader in mind if you’re trying to sell, educate, entertain or inform them. But don’t forget to write for yourself first and foremost.
Because after all, if your writing isn’t something that you wanna read then why the hell would anyone else wanna read it?
