I've tried the whole waking up at ungodly hours of the morning to get after it and it's just not for me.
The most I've been able to mange was a few weeks before fatigue set in and I felt burnt out.
I now work around a routine that best suits me and I do most of my goal chasing in the evening - as I'm more of a night owl than an early riser.
Finding a routine that best suits you and that you can stick to is the key to working towards your goals in a happy frame of mind.
