Laying underneath a 40ft haulage trailer, staring up at the vehicle’s filthy undercarriage, gritty black rainwater — from the driver’s recent ‘adventure’ — trickling down my face, I couldn’t help but think ‘This is not what I signed up for.’
Great Expectations
Slumped over my desk, head in hands, gazing aimlessly out of the grimy classroom window, the drone of the class teacher fell upon deaf ears.
Whilst I was there physically, mentally I was a million miles away, debating in my mind which direction I should take in life once my ‘time’ in school had been served.
I knew for certain that university was out of the question based on the lack of enthusiasm that was present throughout my school years, and besides, racking up a $40-$50K debt with only a slight possibility of achieving a degree that would likely be of little value to me was hard to justify.
No, I had my mind set on a manual labour job, a trade perhaps.
